Because cats attain reproductive maturity quickly, we neuter both male and female cats at four months of age, as recommended by the RSPCA and Cats Protection. A female cat’s uterus and ovaries are removed during spaying. A male cat must have both testes removed in order to undergo castration.
Benefits of Cat Neutering
- Prevents unwanted pregnancies and womb infections
- Can help prevent tumours and breast cancer
- Can also help prevent testicular cancer and prostate disease
- Assists in preventing roaming and aggressive behaviour
It’s normal to neuter! 86% of owned cats in the UK are neutered*

Should I let my cat have one litter before spaying her?
There are no proven health advantages to letting your cat have a litter, and the same is true for dogs and rabbits. This is a frequently asked subject.
General anaesthesia for cats
At Kings Vets, we have procedures in place to guarantee your pet’s safety throughout the general anaesthetic required for neutering. During surgery and recuperation, your pet will be closely observed by a committed Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN). There is always some risk associated with anaesthesia, but it is quite minimal for neutering because the pets are usually young, healthy, and fit.
Your pet’s risk of anaesthesia may increase depending on their breed, age, and other underlying medical conditions. We can perform a pre-anesthesia blood test before your pet’s procedure to find any underlying issues; this can be discussed both when the procedure is scheduled and on the day of the procedure. In addition to a premedication to help your pet rest, they will receive two types of pain management. Don’t worry; your pet will always have support from the Kings Vets staff.

Your cat will stay the day with us
We will review the consent documents and discuss the procedure upon admission. The consent document must be signed by the approved agent or the registered owner, who must be at least eighteen years old. Later that day, our experts will release your cat after they are pleased with their recovery. We’ll admit your pet as a “day patient.”
The staff will go over all of the information you require regarding post-operative care and pain management during your pet’s discharge appointment. Once you and your pet are settled back at home, please call us at 01664 567481 for our Melton practice or 0116 260 9367 for our Syston practice if you have any more queries. We are always available by phone.
Before your Cat Neutering Appointment
We ask that you bring your cat in a safe cat basket with a homey-smelling blanket when you visit Kings Vets. Because they are territorial animals, cats prefer to remain in places they are acquainted with. To learn how to get ready to travel to us with your cat, click here.
