Rabbit microchipping might enable you both reconnect if your rabbit ever gets lost after digging their way out of your garden or escaping from their hutch.
We at Kings Vets know how much you value your rabbit. Since rabbits are inherently curious and agile, they pose a serious risk of escape whether housed indoors or out. For this reason, we highly suggest microchipping as a long-term, secure method of identifying and safeguarding your pet.
Microchipping your Dog
We suggest microchipping your rabbit as soon as possible so that you may maybe find it again if it gets lost. It may surprise you to hear that rabbits may also be microchipped, along with many other species including ferrets, snakes, parrots, and horses.
The microchip is only inserted into the scruff of the neck, under the skin, much like an injection. It is roughly the size of an enormous grain of rice and lasts a lifetime. At the time of the implant, boundary veterinarians will ask you to complete a registration form. After that, a Boundary vet team member will enter your details into a nationwide database. The purchase of the microchip includes all of this, and it will be kept in the database for the life of your rabbit.
Every chip has a unique number that is linked to information about you and your pets. A national database then has these details.
The staff would be able to use a specialised scanner to read your rabbit’s chip, find your information, and joyfully reunite you two if your rabbit got lost and had to be brought to a veterinarian office, animal charity, etc.
Why Microchip a Rabbit?
While often associated with dogs and cats, microchipping rabbits is equally important. Rabbits can easily escape from hutches, gardens or even indoor enclosures. If found, a microchip gives rescuers a quick way to contact you and reunite you with your pet.
Unlike collars or ID tags, which can be lost or removed, a microchip is a secure and lifelong form of identification.

Rabbit Microchipping FAQs
Is Microchipping Rabbits Safe?
True. For rabbits, microchipping is a quick, safe, and well-tolerated process. A sterile needle is used to insert the rice-sized microchip beneath the skin between the shoulder blades. The process is not very uncomfortable and is comparable to a standard injection.
To help your rabbit feel less stressed, Kings Vets suggests microchipping them while they are under mild anaesthesia or during a regular treatment like neutering. However, depending on your rabbit’s disposition, you can do it while it’s awake.
What Does the Microchip Do?
A unique identifying number found on the microchip is linked to you on a national database. The chip may be scanned and you can be alerted right once if your rabbit is located and brought to a veterinarian, animal shelter or wildlife centre.
Please be aware that a microchip cannot provide real-time location information for your rabbit; it is not a tracking device.
Is It a Legal Requirement to Microchip Rabbits?
In the UK, microchipping rabbits is not yet required by law. Nonetheless, as part of proper pet management, we highly advise it. A microchip is the greatest way to establish ownership in the sad event that your rabbit is stolen or lost.
Do I Need to Update My Details?
Yes. Maintaining current contact information in the Microchip database is crucial. Contact the database provider to make sure your rabbit’s record is up to date if you move or change your phone number.
You may get guidance from Kings Vets on how to register and update your microchip details.
How Much Does Rabbit Microchipping Cost?
